Intoxicants
Clear policies regarding the use of intoxicants in the workplace are essential for employee health and safety. This standard outlines criteria for ensuring organisations have effective policies in place and that managers are confident in addressing issues related to intoxicants. It emphasises clear communication and adherence to regulations to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
Assessors will be looking at how an organisation responds to problematic use of intoxicants and has support systems in place for those in need of help and advice.
There are three performance levels for each of the standards within the KeepWell Mark: Commitment, Achievement, and Excellence. To be accredited with the KeepWell Mark, the commitment level will need to be met for all 8 pillars. Once a company reaches commitment level, they can work towards reaching a higher level at their own pace and with guidance from our team of experts.
Commitment level
For companies that are starting out, the commitment level can act as a useful checklist to ensure legal obligations are met. There are six standards that need to be met to obtain the commitment level for intoxicants. The topic guide that members receive gives insights and recommendations to assist in achieving this. An example of a standard and the required evidence can be seen below.
Standard: The onboarding of new employees outlines how to access relevant policies and support services in relation to misuse of intoxicants.
Evidence: Induction covers all intoxicant-related guidance, including policies and procedures. This can be included in the employee handbook, onboarding training programme or other related policies and materials.
Achievement level
Having put the buildings blocks in place, companies that meet a further three standards can reach the achievement level.
Standard: The organisation actively promotes 'quit smoking services’ and employees are afforded flexibility to attend.
Evidence: The organisation promotes quit smoking services to encourage employees who wish to quit. Employees are given time to attend talks, seminars, etc. Where there is a smoking population within the workforce, smoking is highlighted as a key lifestyle factor, and included as a theme in any overall wellbeing programme.
Excellence level
To continue to build workplace wellbeing and by meeting an additional three standards, a company can work towards the excellence level, the highest achievement possible.
Standard: Managers have access to information on how to identify the signs of intoxicants misuse and can direct employees to applicable supports including medical practitioners.
Evidence: Managers have attended intoxicants management training, which includes information on addiction awareness. This should be customised to the company where possible. Course content and attendance records are available for review.
