Best practice for managing employees on long term sick leave includes holding welfare meetings. This is for several reasons including checking in on the employee, understanding the employee’s situation, discussing potential reasonable accommodations and developing potential return to work plans. However, the recent case of A Childcare Worker v A Childcare Provider (ADJ-00050258, December 2024) highlights the need for employers to consider an employee’s individual circumstances when scheduling welfare meetings.
