Business Europe Publishes Recommendations to Reduce Regulatory Burden

January 28, 2025

Business Europe has published a policy recommendations document, aimed at reducing the EU’s regulatory burden on businesses. The document entitled ‘REDUCING REGULATORY BURDEN TO RESTORE THE EU’S COMPETITIVE EDGE’ lists 68 proposals for the European Commission to adopt. This report follows a thorough consultation process with national trade associations and the European business community which found an urgent need for the EU to cut the regulatory burden on business.

Already, the new European Commission, the European Parliament and the EU Council, has emphasised a priority to improve competitiveness and reduce regulatory burdens on businesses during its term to 2029. European Commission President von der Leyen has also established an initiative to reduce reporting requirements by at least 25% (and 35% for SMEs).

The Business Europe recommendations focus around 11 key areas (listed below):

  • energy and climate
  • circular economy
  • consumer policy
  • sustainable finance and company law
  • taxation
  • financial reporting
  • international value chains and trade
  • digital economy
  • employment and social policy
  • food law
  • financial services

Full details of the recommendations can be found here.
