Taking the Stress Out of Switching Off
When you're counting down the days to a well-earned break, whether it’s a summer getaway or a long weekend, it can be hard to switch off fully. With deadlines to meet and inboxes overflowing, even the thought of taking time off can create stress.
At Better Workday, we know that preparing for time away shouldn’t feel like just another task on your list. That’s why we developed a simple five-day pre-holiday routine that helps you step away with peace of mind.
Why time off matters
Rest isn’t a luxury. It’s essential to productivity, motivation, and well-being. Taking a break from meetings, messages, and mental clutter gives you space to think and time to reconnect with what matters most - whether that’s your family, your goals, or simply yourself.
But unplugging doesn’t happen automatically. It takes intentional planning, and that starts before your out-of-office reply goes on.
A simple 3-day plan for switching off
Here’s how to prepare for a smoother, more restorative break.
3 workdays to go: Audit your task list
Start by reviewing your workload. Ask yourself:
- What can be deleted?
- What absolutely needs to be done before you leave?
- What can wait?
If your must-do list is too long, it’s time to manage expectations- yours and others’. Set clear priorities now to avoid last-minute stress later.
2 workdays to go: Plan your return
It’s easy to dread coming back to a chaotic calendar. So take control now:
- Identify the 2–3 key priorities you’ll focus on first.
- Block time in your calendar to work on them.
Prepare any materials or notes you’ll need to hit the ground running.
A few minutes of planning now can eliminate hours of post-holiday overwhelm.
1 workday to go: Reflect and reset
Before you log off:
- Take 15 minutes to reflect on the past week. What worked? What didn’t?
- Consider one habit you’d like to shift in the months ahead.
- Complete your holiday wind-down checklist:
- Set your out-of-office message.
- Power down your laptop and tidy your workspace.
- Remove work apps from your phone, if needed.
- Walk away from your desk and mark the moment with a favourite tune or a short walk.
This simple routine can help you disconnect from work and decompress.
The Benefits of Unplugging
Taking time to switch off doesn't just make your break more enjoyable; it also sets you up for success upon your return. With a clear mind and a refreshed perspective, you'll be better equipped to lead, collaborate, and innovate.
So, whether it’s a week on the coast or a quiet few days at home, give yourself permission to pause. Your work - and your well-being - will benefit in the long run.
