New measures announced by government last week to address massive employment cost increases are a welcome acknowledgement of the problem, but don’t go nearly far enough. The additional allocation of the Increased Cost of Doing Business grant, the adjustment of the PRSI threshold and a range of other changes are positive but will not make a material difference to most businesses. Further significant measures will be needed in the budget, along with a fundamental revision of the timeline for the introduction of future government-initiated cost increases.
