Europe is becoming an increasingly tough starting point for medical technologies—burdened by the structural hurdles of MDR and IVDR—while access to the US market is now clouded by rising tariffs, leaving many unsure where to launch or how to scale effectively.
Hot on the heels of new US “reciprocal tariffs” introduced on April 2nd, including a 20% hit for EU exports and 125% on China, the rules of engagement are shifting fast. Startups and SMEs aiming for the US market now face higher costs and more uncertainty, especially for products reliant on global supply chains—chips, sensors, plastics, metals—just to get to market.
Despite a 90-day pause on some tariffs, the baseline 10% remains in place for most, creating long-term ripples in both strategy and spend. Europe feels tighter, the US feels riskier—but innovation waits for no one.
