Ireland has come a long way in tackling discrimination and inequality and protecting individuals in doing their job and engaging in society.

Legislation in Ireland promotes equality, prohibits discrimination, and makes it an offence to communicate threatening, abusive or insulting material that is intended or likely to cause hatred towards a group of people because of specific characteristics such as their race, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation.

Despite this, Ireland has seen an increase in harassment, abuse and violence in society. It is often directed towards people from other countries, members of the LGBTQ+ community or employees in their workplaces. This behaviour is occurring at different levels in society including at the workplace.

This Combatting Aggression and Harassment in the Workplace toolkit aims to address the typical issues around workplace harassment and aggression. It will examine the employer responsibilities from both an equality and health and safety legislative position. It will outline what tools can be used to address and prevent such incidents escalating, such as risk assessments and workplace harassment and aggression checklists.
