Ibec Launches Priorities for the New European Commission, Parliament and Council 2024-2029

September 25, 2024

Ibec, the group representing Irish business, has launched its priorities for the new term of the European Commission, Parliament and Council in Brussels today. According to Ibec, the 2024-2029 EU political cycle is occurring during a challenging time for both Ireland and Europe.

In outlining their priorities, Ibec emphasised that the EU should focus on competitiveness, unlocking the potential of the Single Market, concentrating on EU added value, and renewing its commitment to openness. Furthermore, the document outlines how the EU has an opportunity to be a global leader in digital and AI transformation.

Pat Ivory, Director of EU and International Affairs at Ibec, said:

“The new EU cycle comes at a time of global economic turbulence, with intensifying geopolitical tensions and rising protectionism. Key global players like the US and China are heavily subsidizing their industries, leading to market distortions. The EU must respond to ensure that Europe remains competitive and does not get left behind. It is important that any new EU industrial strategy is developed to support the needs of all member states and remains open to trade and investment.

During the next term, businesses will face significant changes with the implementation of new, complex legislation, particularly around sustainability and digital policies. Meanwhile, EU social and labour market reforms, along with national policies, will reshape the business landscape.

This new EU cycle offers an opportunity to strengthen the union for both businesses and citizens, ensuring it meets the needs of all member states. To succeed, the EU must prioritize competitiveness, innovation, and economic openness while addressing security and regulatory challenges. These priorities will determine our future growth, investment, job creation, and the transition to a sustainable and digital economy.”
