About the project

Farming for Water is a new €60 million project which has been announced with the aim of supporting up to 15,000 farmers to improve water quality. The initiative represents an opportunity for the agricultural sector to make a cost-free investment in the future.

The Farming for Water project is the largest European Innovation Partnership (EIP) ever carried out in Ireland. A budget of €50 million over five years has been allocated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine. The budget will cover supports for innovative solutions to enhance water quality including the provision of rainwater management plans, earthen bunds and tree planting.

The Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is contributing €10 million to cover the administrative and operational costs of the project.

Good water quality provides many benefits for everyone including clean drinking water, water for livestock, tourism & recreation, other industries and sectors. It is also important for wildlife and is necessary to support vibrant local economies & healthy communities.
